Cowboys' 2024 Training Camp: Key Position Battles and Emerging Talents to Watch

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their 2024 training camp in Oxnard, California, there is palpable excitement and curiosity surrounding the team, especially at key positions. The spotlight will undoubtedly be on quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, both of whom are seeking new contracts. Their performance during training camp is critical, not just for their contract negotiations but also for setting the tone for the season. The team hopes their play can shift focus away from off-field distractions and center it on repeating as NFC East champions and achieving a tenth win for the fourth consecutive year under coach Mike McCarthy.

One player who has flown under the radar but could be crucial to the Cowboys' success is tight end Jake Ferguson. Last season, Ferguson ranked in the top ten among all tight ends for catches, yards, and touchdowns, averaging over ten yards per reception. His emergence as a big play threat has been a significant boost for the Cowboys. However, his success somewhat overshadowed the lack of impact from rookie second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker, who struggled in his first year. The potential for Ferguson and Schoonmaker to work together in McCarthy’s offense is evident, but how that unfolds remains a key storyline.

The Cowboys' offense was notably inconsistent last season, showing stark contrasts between their home and away performances. At AT&T Stadium, they scored over 30 points in seven of eight games, winning them all. Ferguson's standout performances were crucial in these games, as he contributed significantly with three of his top four receiving yard totals and all five of his touchdowns coming at home. As the team looks to enhance its offensive effectiveness, finding ways to maximize Ferguson's impact in his third year will be essential. His ability to create mismatches and open up opportunities for other players like Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Jalen Tolbert will be closely watched.

Schoonmaker's progress will be another point of interest. Currently rehabbing a shoulder injury that required surgery, Schoonmaker's availability for camp and the season is uncertain. Despite his limited role as a rookie, he was involved in the underneath passing game and could be a valuable asset if he recovers fully. With the Cowboys likely introducing two new starters on the offensive line and potentially adopting a running back-by-committee approach, efficient short passing will be crucial. Schoonmaker’s contribution could become significant if he can return to form.

Stephens Jr. will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in preseason games, starting with the opener against the Rams on August 11. His route running and ball adjustment abilities could provide the Cowboys with an additional offensive weapon and lessen the reliance on Prescott's arm alone.

Third-year tight end Peyton Hendershot is also in the mix. After missing minicamp due to a minor medical procedure and spending much of his second season on injured reserve, Hendershot faces stiff competition. Nonetheless, his sharp route-running and special teams contributions could help him secure a spot. Similarly, Princeton Fant, an undrafted free agent from 2023, offers potential as a special teams contributor and could provide depth at tight end.

The tight end group is one of several positions where the Cowboys will need to make tough decisions. The roster will undergo scrutiny, particularly at tight end, offensive line, running back, defensive line, and the secondary. While Ferguson's role as a key player is solidified, the competition for backup spots will be intense. This training camp will be crucial for determining which players will make the final roster and how the team will address various needs heading into the season.

As the Cowboys prepare to hit the practice fields on July 25th, the team is poised to turn offseason uncertainties into strengths. With a mix of established stars and emerging talents, including a competitive tight end group, Dallas is looking to build on last season's success and overcome any obstacles that may arise.
